This is the original 1936 first edition sheet music (5 pages) of the cheerful optimistic song “Nu, kak ne spet'” (“Well, How Can I Not Sing”) by the “king of Soviet light music” Isaak Osipovich Dunaevsky (1900–1955), with lyrics by the leading Soviet poet and songwriter Vasily Ivanovich Lebedev-Kumach (1898–1949). The song was composed for and featured in the short musical comedy film “S novym godom!” (“Happy New Year!”, 1936, directed by Grigoriy Aleksandrov or related New Year thematic shorts of the era), embodying the joyful, life-affirming spirit of mid-1930s Soviet popular culture on the eve of the 1937 celebrations. Dunaevsky’s melody is bright, march-like, and instantly memorable — typical of his signature style that blended jazz influences, operetta, and mass song accessibility.
