Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) published The Three Musketeers in 1844, first as a serial in the newspaper Le Siecle, and Auguste Maquet is credited as his collaborator in bibliographies such as Fantlab. The biographical note printed in this copy gives Dumas's birth year as 1803, a year late. The novel follows the young Gascon d'Artagnan, who arrives in Paris under Louis XIII, befriends the musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and is drawn into the court intrigue around Queen Anne, Cardinal Richelieu, the Duke of Buckingham and the poisoner Milady, a story that runs through the siege of La Rochelle to the execution of its villainess. The preface and the note in this volume cite the memoirs of d'Artagnan attributed to Courtilz de Sandras as Dumas's source. The Russian text is the translation by V. Valdman, D. Livshits and K. Ksanina, with the chapters divided among the three as the verso note details; Fantlab dates this version to 1949, so this 1954 Detgiz printing is not a first edition. It is a heavy volume of 744 pages, set in type on 3 April and signed to press on 28 July 1954 in a run of 75,000 copies, and it belongs to the Library of Adventure and Science Fiction (BPiNF), the Detgiz frame series, in red cloth with a gilt ornamental border. The illustrations are by Maurice Leloir, the French artist whose drawings for the novel date from the 1890s, and the endpapers reproduce a montage of the three musketeers with scenes of a ladder climb, a duel, a dance and a rider. As a major classic in the frame series binding, it appeals to collectors of Soviet editions of Dumas, frame series completists, and readers of historical adventure in Russian.
