A landmark work in twentieth-century mathematical pedagogy by Jean Dieudonné (1906-1992), one of the founding members of the Bourbaki collective and among the most influential French mathematicians of his generation. Written as a foundational text to prepare university entrants for the "new math" curriculum reform sweeping French and international mathematics education in the 1960s, the book makes the case, argued forcefully in Dieudonné's polemical introduction, for abandoning classical Euclidean pedagogy in favor of teaching elementary geometry directly through the structures of linear algebra: vector spaces, affine and Euclidean geometry of the plane and three-dimensional space, built axiomatically from real numbers upward. The Russian edition was overseen by Isaak Yaglom, a leading Soviet geometer closely engaged with mathematics education reform, whose own work on transformation groups and elementary geometry made him a natural editor for this text within the Soviet reform movement associated with Kolmogorov. Dieudonné's book became one of the defining statements of the international "new math" movement and remains of interest to historians of mathematics education and to collectors of Bourbaki-associated publications for its role in this influential and controversial pedagogical program.
