This is the 1938 Soviet edition of Denis Diderot's seminal philosophical dialogue, Paradoxe sur le comédien (The Paradox of the Actor), originally composed around 1773-1778 and posthumously published in 1830. This Russian translation was prepared by the noted literary scholar and translator Konstantin Nikolaevich Derzhavin (1903-1956), who also provided an introductory article and commentary, framing the work within Marxist-Leninist aesthetics. Published by the state publishing house "Iskusstvo" (Art) in Moscow-Leningrad, this volume features a cover design by artist L. S. Khizhinsky. Diderot's "paradox" argues that great acting relies not on the performer's emotional sensibility, but on controlled observation and technical mastery—a cold intellect that mimics passion. This edition, appearing during the high Stalinist period, represents the Soviet academic engagement with Enlightenment thought, presenting it as a document of "profound historical shifts." As a well-produced hardcover with scholarly apparatus, it is a collectible item for those interested in the history of theater theory, philosophy, and Soviet reception of Western classics.
