A lavishly produced and much-loved Soviet manual on infant and child nutrition, first issued by Gostorgizdat in 1957 and reprinted repeatedly through the 1960s to meet enormous demand; the present copy belongs to the 1963 printing, part of a combined run of two million copies. Assembled under the guidance of two of the most prominent figures in Soviet pediatrics, Georgy N. Speransky and Alexander F. Tur, together with a team of physicians and nutritionists, the book set out detailed feeding schedules, recipes, and hygiene guidance for children from birth through age five, and became a fixture in Soviet households as much for its authority as for its visual appeal. Its illustrations were entrusted to a group of leading Soviet graphic artists, including Nikolai Zhukov, renowned for his wartime frontline drawings and later canonical portraits of Lenin, and Ivan Ganf, a noted caricaturist for the satirical journal Krokodil, alongside A. Brei, G. Val'k, F. Glebov, and B. Fridkin, whose watercolor vignettes, decorative endpapers, and playful "a bit of history" sidebars on the origins of common foods give the volume the character of an illustrated encyclopedia rather than a plain manual. Adding a further layer of cultural interest, the accompanying verses were contributed by the children's poets Natalia Konchalovskaya and Sergei Mikhalkov, while short essays appear under the byline of Nikolai Cherkasov, the celebrated People's Artist of the USSR best known for his title roles in Eisenstein's "Alexander Nevsky" and "Ivan the Terrible." The book remains a sought-after example of Soviet mid-century design and popular science publishing, of interest to collectors of Soviet book illustration, domestic and parenting history, and design culture of the period.
