This is the first number of Groznenskiy neftyanik (Grozny Oilman), a popular-technical monthly issued at Grozny for November 1930 by the Groznefti oil trust and the Chechen Regional Committee of the Miners' Union, edited by L. G. Ginzburg. It is notable first for its late-Constructivist design. The cover and illustrations are by N. Sitnikov, who signed several blocks and dated them 1930. The cover is a black block-printed composition: a monumental Roman numeral V, the five-year plan, carries a circled figure 2 1/2 at its tip, a worker strains at a wheel at its foot, and a derrick and a cracking column rise behind, under a hand-lettered title climbing diagonally in brush script beside a circled numeral 1. Inside, the artist turns statistics into pictures: stepped storage tanks, refinery stills and ascending drilling lines replace the bars and curves in the chart of the new oil five-year plan of the North Caucasus; a diagonal page sets 1917 against 1930, with an arrow rising to ten million tons; the geological sections carry heavy hand-lettered capitals set vertically. The text argues the same case: the slogan of the day, the oil five-year plan in two and a half years, runs through the issue, with the circular mutual guarantee signed at Grozny on 16 October 1930 by the oil miners of the North Caucasus, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Dagestan, with pledges against absenteeism and for shock brigades. Beside the propaganda stand technical papers on the new Benoy district, gas-lift, cracking gases and lubricating oils, and a correspondence from America. It will interest collectors of Soviet graphic design and historians of the oil industry of Chechnya and the North Caucasus.
