Simon Chikovani (1902/03-1966) stands among the most significant Georgian poets of the twentieth century, having begun his career in the 1920s Tbilisi avant-garde before becoming one of the central figures of Georgian Soviet letters: chief editor of the "Sabchota Mtserali" publishing house from 1932, longtime chairman of the Georgian Writers' Union, and a Stalin Prize laureate in 1947 for his poem "Song of David Guramishvili."
