This substantial volume is a representative example of how the Soviet state canonized and presented classical Russian literature to the youth. Published in 1935 by the State Children's Publishing House (Detizdat), it was intended for the "older age" group of schoolchildren. The edition is distinguished by the scholarly apparatus provided by Alexander Iosifovich Roskin (1898-1941), a prominent literary critic and biographer of Chekhov. The book is lavishly illustrated with graphic works by Nikolai Alexandrovich Shishlovsky (1891-1955) and features decorative elements by other artists.
