A post-war Soviet edition of Anton Chekhov's beloved children's story, Kashtanka, published by Detgiz in 1947. This edition was issued as part of the mass-market School Library series, aimed at providing affordable classical literature to Soviet pupils in the immediate post-war period. The story, originally written by Chekhov in 1887, remains one of the most poignant tales in Russian literature, exploring themes of loyalty, home, and the perspective of the "little man" through the experiences of a lost dog. The illustrations for this edition were provided by I. Kharkevich, with cover art by B. Smirnov. As is characteristic of post-war Detgiz mass editions, this booklet was printed on low-grade pulp paper, which is highly prone to age-toning. Despite a significant print run of 150,000 copies, these fragile softcover school booklets were heavily used by children of the era, making surviving copies in clean, complete condition increasingly uncommon. This copy retains a firm binding and presents a clear, representative example of mid-1940s Soviet children's book design.
