This compact guidebook was compiled by Lazar (Lazar) Vladimir Rosenthal (1894–1990), a Soviet art historian who had been a research fellow at the Tretyakov Gallery since 1925. Published by the Gallery itself, this third edition from 1930 provides a snapshot of the museum's collection and layout during a dynamic period of Soviet cultural history, just before major renovations and expansions. Rosenthal, who also authored studies on museum visitorship, created a practical tool designed for the growing public audience of the time. As an official publication from the era, it serves as a valuable historical document, reflecting how one of Russia's premier art institutions presented itself and its national collection in the early decades of the USSR.
