The first Georgian-language edition of Ray Bradbury, a substantial single-volume collection comprising complete translations of Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles together with a selection of his short stories, with a scholarly foreword by the Georgian orientalist and literary historian Aleksandre Gvakharia. The volume appeared during the height of Soviet interest in Bradbury, whose humanist science fiction, skeptical of technological triumphalism and censorship, was read in the USSR as compatible with socialist-humanist values despite its distinctly anti-totalitarian undertones, and whose work circulated in translation across the Soviet republics from the 1960s onward in large print runs. The very large run of 50,000 copies for this Georgian edition reflects Bradbury's exceptional popularity among Soviet readers of science fiction, for whom his work represented one of the primary channels of access to American speculative literature. The book gathers what were, by 1973, considered his two defining works alongside a substantial body of shorter fiction, giving Georgian readers a comprehensive one-volume introduction to his work. It will interest collectors of Soviet-era science fiction publishing and of Georgian translations of major twentieth-century Western authors.
