This volume presents the Russian translation of a significant philosophical and historical work by Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678–1751), a major English statesman and thinker of the early Enlightenment. Published in 1978 by the USSR Academy of Sciences publishing house "Nauka" as part of the prestigious series "Monuments of Historical Thought", it exemplifies the high standards of Soviet academic publishing. The translation, undertaken by S. M. Berkovskaya, is accompanied by a scholarly apparatus typical of the series: detailed notes by F. N. Arsky and T. A. Pavlova, and an introductory article prepared under the general editorship of the prominent historian Mikhail Abramovich Barg (1915–1991). This edition made Bolingbroke's influential ideas on the pragmatic and moral utility of history accessible to the Russian-speaking academic community, representing a serious engagement with Western historical philosophy during the late Soviet period.
