A foundational and poignant work in Caucasian linguistics. Anatoly Bokarev (1910–1941) was a highly gifted Soviet linguist and a leading specialist in Dagestanian languages. Despite his youth, he made massive contributions to the study of Avar and other local languages through rigorous field expeditions in the 1930s. His life was tragically cut short when he volunteered for the front and died defending Leningrad in 1941. This fundamental monograph on Avar syntax, based on his doctoral research, was prepared for posthumous publication by his colleagues.
