A first Georgian-language edition of a story collection by Fakir Baykurt (1929-1999), one of the leading figures of Turkey's village-novel (köy romanı) tradition and a prominent socialist-realist writer of rural Anatolian life. A schoolteacher by training who taught in Anatolian villages before turning to writing, Baykurt became internationally known for novels depicting the poverty, feudal social relations, and slow modernization of the Turkish countryside, and later spent years in political exile in West Germany after the 1980 military coup. The present collection of short stories was issued not by a Tbilisi press but by the Adjaran ASSR's own "Sabchota Ach'ara" ("Soviet Adjara") publishing house in Batumi, reflecting the particular interest of Soviet Adjara, with its historic ties to the Black Sea and Ottoman-Turkish borderlands, in contemporary Turkish literature. Issued in a very large print run of 50,000 copies, the book was part of the broader Soviet effort to promote socially engaged Turkish left-wing writers to a Soviet Georgian readership. Of interest to collectors of Soviet-era translations of Turkish literature and of the regional publishing history of Adjara.
