Published in 1934 to commemorate the millennium of the birth of the great Persian poet Ferdowsi (c. 940-1020), this monograph provides a concise historical and literary overview of his monumental epic, the Shahnameh (The Book of Kings). The author, Aleksandre Baramidze (1902-1994), was a highly distinguished Georgian literary scholar, philologist, and academician who dedicated much of his career to the study of Georgian-Persian literary relations and the history of ancient Georgian literature. The Shahnameh had a profound and lasting impact on the Georgian literary tradition, with numerous medieval Georgian translations and adaptations reflecting the deep cultural ties between the two nations.
