The sole Russian translation of Mario Baldassarri's survey of abstract algebraic geometry, originally published in the celebrated Ergebnisse der Mathematik und ihrer Grenzgebiete series (Springer-Verlag, 1956) and brought into Russian in 1961 to fill what the editors describe as a conspicuous gap in the domestic literature on the subject. The translation is a work of particular biographical interest: it was carried out by Yuri Ivanovich Manin, then twenty-four years old and only at the outset of a career that would establish him as one of the foremost mathematicians of the twentieth century, working across algebraic geometry, number theory, and mathematical physics. The editor of the Russian edition, Mikhail Mikhailovich Postnikov, a leading Soviet topologist, states in his preface that he corrected inaccuracies in the original and substantially reworked several passages, most notably in chapter 7, marking the significant revisions with special typographic signs and taking full responsibility for the changes. The volume surveys the central results of abstract algebraic geometry as it stood in the mid-1950s, at the crossroads of algebra, topology, and differential geometry, and remains of interest both as a mathematical reference from a formative period in the field and as an early published work bearing Manin's name, sought by collectors assembling his complete bibliography.
