This propaganda album by the master of Soviet political caricature Vladimir Nikolaevich Deni (Denisov, 1893–1946) is a direct artistic response to the 1931 Moscow Trial of the "Union Bureau of Mensheviks," one of the early Stalinist show trials. Deni, whose work regularly appeared in Pravda and Krokodil and who later co-created the famous "TASS Windows" during WWII, here employs his sharp, satirical style to visually demonize the defendants, who were accused of sabotage and espionage. Published in a large print run by the state art publisher Izogiz, the album features 58 tipped-in color plates and exemplifies the early 1930s mobilization of graphic art for ideological campaigns, transforming legal proceedings into a powerful visual spectacle for mass consumption. It stands as a significant artifact of Stalinist visual culture and the politicization of art.
