[Cover and design by Varvara Stepanova]
Literature and Art. Journal of Marxist Criticism and Methodology. Issues 1, 2 for 1930.
Editor-in-chief: P.M. Kerzhentsev.
Moscow: Organ of the Institute of Literature, Art, and Language of the Communist Academy, 1930. 192 + 207 pp.
Soft publisher’s constructivist covers in two colors, format 25 × 18 cm.
Condition: Scuffs and soiling on covers, losses to spines. Issue 2 is missing one leaf (pages 121–122). Issue 1 is in good condition.
Issue 1 includes unique materials: a text and poster from ROSTA Windows by Vladimir Mayakovsky, an obituary with a portrait of Taras Kostrov, four plans for the Green City by architects N. Ladovsky, Friedman, M. Ginzburg, and K. Melnikov, and a major article by O. Beskin, “Early Mayakovsky,” with his 1915 portrait. The issue also features portraits of E. Blum, Vsevolod Vishnevsky, N. Tanin, and 18 in-text illustrations. Issue 2 contains a portrait of Georgy Plekhanov and stills from cultural films: Igdenbu, Energy Link, In Spring, and Complete Collectivization.
The design of both issues was created by the prominent avant-garde artist Varvara Fyodorovna Stepanova (1894–1958), a leading figure in constructivism and collaborator of Alexander Rodchenko. Her two-color cover designs embody the constructivist aesthetic, characterized by simplicity, functionality, and dynamic typographic and geometric compositions, making them a significant example of Soviet graphic design in the 1930s.
