This issue of the short-lived ten-day journal "Stroyka" (Construction), published in Leningrad in 1931, represents a vivid snapshot of early Stalinist cultural policy. The journal served as a platform for literature, criticism, and political writing during the First Five-Year Plan, a period of intense industrialization and ideological mobilization. The cover and artistic design for this issue were created by Nikolay Pavlovich Akimov (1901–1968), the renowned Soviet stage designer, director, and graphic artist, whose early work here displays a transition from avant-garde experimentation to the more figurative, agitational style that would become prevalent. This publication is a valuable primary source for understanding the interplay between artistic expression, literary criticism, and state ideology at a pivotal moment in Soviet cultural history.
