This monograph, co-authored by a group of leading Soviet scientists and analysts, addresses the critical strategic and ethical dilemma of militarizing space, a central issue of the late Cold War. The copy bears the autograph of Stanislav Nikolaevich Rodionov (1929–2014), a Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and one of the contributors. After graduating from Moscow State University in 1953, Rodionov worked at prestigious institutes like the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where he conducted pioneering experiments with charged particle traps and colliding beams. Published in 1986 by Mir, the main Soviet publisher for foreign scientific literature, this book reflects the intense internal scientific and political debate within the USSR regarding the Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars") and arms control. It represents a significant artifact of Soviet defensive strategic thought on the eve of Perestroika.
