This early poetic and reflective prose work by Ilya Grigorievich Ehrenburg (1891–1967) was published shortly after his return to Russia from emigration, capturing his impressions of a Europe still reeling from World War I. Published in Moscow in 1922 by the publishing house "Kostry" (Bonfires), this first edition is a bibliographic rarity that marks a pivotal moment in the career of one of the most complex and internationally engaged Soviet literary figures. Ehrenburg, who would become a paramount journalist, novelist, and cultural intermediary between the USSR and the West, here processes the existential and political turmoil of the interwar period. A copy bearing what is presumably the author's autograph would significantly enhance its value as a unique artifact from the formative years of Soviet literature.
