A well-regarded early Soviet practical and historical guide to textile ornamentation, issued by the prestigious Academia publishing house under the general editorship of Nikolai Sobolev, the leading Soviet authority on decorative and applied art of the period. Written by Tamara Armand, the book surveys ornament and pattern across historical styles and world textile traditions, including chapters on Persian, Arabic, and Indian ornament, and on the relationship between style and costume from antiquity through the eighteenth century, before turning in its second half to practical technique: dyes, methods for batik and tie-dye ("bandan"), stencil work, airbrushing, and the preparation and fixing of colors on silk, cotton, linen, and artificial-silk fabrics.
