A handsomely produced anniversary anthology gathering Russian-language translations of Georgian Soviet poetry, published by Merani in 1971 to mark the 50th jubilee of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. The publisher's foreword frames the volume explicitly within this commemorative context, presenting five decades of Georgian poetry under Soviet rule as a chronicle of the republic's "social and national rebirth." The anthology assembles work by multiple generations of twentieth-century Georgian poets in Russian translation, each represented with a brief introductory portrait illustration. This format gives the book something of the character of a portrait gallery of modern Georgian letters. The volume was a substantial production undertaking for its time: a large-format cloth binding with gilt and colored stamping, illustrated endpapers, individually commissioned poet portraits, and an accompanying pictorial dust jacket, issued in a modest run of 3,000 copies.
