Terkin in the Other World is a poem written by Alexander Tvardovsky between 1944 and 1963, continuing the storyline begun in "The Book of a Soldier" with the resilient soldier Vasily Terkin.
An early version of "Tyorkin in the Other World" was read by the author to a small circle of writers in 1954 in the presence of N. S. Khrushchev. However, on July 23, 1954, the Secretariat of the Central Committee, chaired by Khrushchev himself, adopted a resolution condemning Tvardovsky. In 1956, Tvardovsky attempted to publish the poem, but again without success. Only after the 20th and especially the 22nd Party Congresses, when the winds had changed and Stalin had been carried out of the mausoleum, did the poem receive Khrushchev's personal approval and was first published in the newspaper Izvestia on August 17, 1963.
