This book is one of the first and most important theoretical works devoted to free verse (vers libre).
After the defeat of Imagism in the late 1920s, Shershenevich's work was forgotten. Interest in it was revived in the 1990s, when free verse and avant-garde experiments became the object of academic research. Today, the book is an important source for studying the dialogue between Russian and French poetry, as well as the evolution of vers libre in world literature.
Quote: “Free verse is not anarchy, but the highest discipline: the poet listens not to rules, but to the music of his own soul.”
(V. Shershenevich).
