The book by the outstanding Soviet polar explorer Ivan Dmitrievich Papanin is a personal diary, which describes in detail the legendary drift of the world's first Soviet scientific research drifting station "North Pole-1" (SP-1). The expedition, which started in 1937 and lasted 274 days, became the most important event in the history of Arctic exploration. In his diary, Papanin records with documentary precision the daily life of four polar explorers: himself, hydrobiologist Pyotr Shirshov, radio engineer Ernst Krenkel, and meteorologist Evgeny Fedorov.
