Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882 -1944) - an outstanding English astronomer and physicist, one of the founders of theoretical astrophysics. From 1914 - Director of the University Observatory. Member of the Royal Society of London (1914). One of the first to study the structure and dynamics of the Galaxy. Proved the reality of the observational effect of two predominant opposite directions in the proper motions of stars. His work subsequently led to the discovery of galactic structural subsystems of different ages.
