This sheet music edition contains the piano piece March of Russian Volunteers by Russian composer Florian Hermann, dedicated to the Russian volunteer heroes who participated in the 1876 liberation wars of Balkan Slavic peoples against the Ottoman Empire. Composed two years before the end of the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), the piece is a grand and striking march that juxtaposes two musical themes, symbolizing the conflict between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The resolute and truthful Russian theme contrasts with the “uncertain” Ottoman motif, which alludes to the Turkish March from Beethoven’s The Ruins of Athens. The piece culminates in a musical prophecy of the Russian march’s triumph, symbolizing Russia’s victory.
