Yuri Pavlovich German (1910–1967) was a Soviet writer, playwright, and screenwriter. He served as a war correspondent during the Great Patriotic War. He is the author of the well-known novels "The Cause You Serve," "My Dear Man," "I Am Responsible for Everything," as well as numerous stories and tales, often devoted to military and heroic themes. His works are distinguished by their psychological depth and attention to everyday details. Iosif Yets (1907–1993) was a Soviet graphic artist and illustrator, known for his work in children's books.
The book "The Sentries," published in the first year of the Great Patriotic War, is a collection of stories aimed at elementary school children. In patriotic and heroic tales, the author simply and poignantly narrates the service and exploits of Soviet border guards — the "sentries" of the Motherland's frontiers. Richly illustrated and published in the well-known "School Library" series, this edition served an important educational purpose during the harsh war years, shaping children's ideals of courage and duty.
