William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was an outstanding English playwright and poet, a classic of world literature. Translator Andriy Gozenpud was a Ukrainian literary scholar, Shakespeare scholar, and translator, author of one of the canonical Ukrainian translations of the tragedy.
A Ukrainian edition of William Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" in the translation by Andriy Gozenpud, published in Kyiv in 1937. Gozenpud's translation, made in the 1930s, is considered one of the most successful Ukrainian translations of Shakespeare, combining poetic quality with stage suitability. The edition, published by "Mystetstvo" (Art) Publishing House, belongs to the period of active development of Ukrainian translated drama during the Soviet era. The book in a hardcover small format was intended both for reading and for theatrical practice.
