These original bulletins provide a real-time record of the 1952 Women’s Candidates Tournament in Moscow, a pivotal event in the history of women's chess. During the early 1950s, the Soviet Union had established total hegemony over the women's game, and this tournament was essentially a battle between the world's elite to decide who would face the reigning champion, Lyudmila Rudenko.
The bulletins contain move-by-move notations of games, opening analyses, and standings. They document the triumph of Elisabeth Bykova, whose victory here propelled her to the World Championship title the following year. The field was legendary, featuring Olga Rubtsova (another future champion) and international stars like Fenny Heemskerk and Edith Keller-Hermann.
Beyond the technical data, these issues reflect the high organizational standards of the "Stalinist Empire" style of sports bureaucracy. Published daily or bi-daily during the event, such bulletins were printed on fragile paper and intended for immediate consumption by trainers and enthusiasts, making surviving copies exceptionally scarce. They are indispensable primary sources for historians of the Soviet chess school and the development of professional women's sports.
