This 1968 monograph is a significant Soviet study of the "poet of reinforced concrete," the legendary Italian engineer and architect Pier Luigi Nervi (1891–1979). Published by Stroyizdat as part of the provocative series "Architecture in Capitalist Countries," this volume arrived at a time when Soviet architects were deeply interested in Nervi’s ability to marry industrial efficiency with high aesthetic expression.
The authors meticulously analyze Nervi’s revolutionary use of ferrocement (armocemento) and his development of prefabricated spatial systems. The book provides a detailed technical and artistic review of his most iconic projects, including the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, the grand exhibition halls in Turin, and the structures built for the 1960 Rome Olympics. Nervi is presented not merely as a builder, but as a philosopher of form who argued that "the correct structural solution is also an aesthetic one."
A unique feature of this edition is the inclusion of Nervi's own thoughts on the ethics of construction and the role of the engineer, curated from his various lectures and articles. This allows the reader to follow his logic in solving the problem of covering massive spans with incredibly thin, light, and elegant shells. The book’s large format and numerous photographs and diagrams serve as a vital visual catalog of Nervi’s structural mastery.
For collectors of architectural literature and historians of modernism, this volume is an essential record of how Western "structuralism" was interpreted and valued within the Soviet professional sphere during the late 1960s. The presence of the original dust jacket is a particularly desirable feature for a book of this era.
