This three-volume set represents the most comprehensive Russian edition of the "Engine Designer's Bible" by Hugo Guldner (1866–1933). First published in Germany in 1903, Guldner’s work became the international gold standard for internal combustion engine (ICE) design, moving the discipline from empirical guesswork to rigorous scientific and engineering calculation.
The 1927–1928 "Makiz" edition is unique for its inclusion of a Supplementary Volume authored by leading specialists from the Moscow Higher Technical School (MVTU)—E. K. Mazing, G. G. Kalish, and S. I. Alexeev. This third volume updated Guldner’s classic theories with the latest Soviet and international advancements in thermal efficiency and fuel injection. The set is a massive technical compendium, featuring 1,285 drawings, 200 tables, and 35 folding plates of intricate engineering designs.
As Professor V. I. Grinevetsky famously noted, Guldner wrote "for practice and from practice," making this set an indispensable relic of the industrialization era. It captures the moment when steam power gave way to the dominance of gas and oil engines. For historians of technology, engineers, and bibliophiles, this complete set—retaining its large-scale blueprints and folding charts—is a premier example of early 20th-century technical publishing and a testament to the foundation of the modern automotive and aeronautical industries.
