This 1982 edition of Arkady Gaydar’s (1904–1941) masterpiece is widely considered one of the most beautiful versions of the story ever produced. Originally published in 1939, Chuk and Gek is a quintessential work of Soviet children's literature, capturing the innocence of childhood against the vast, rugged backdrop of the Soviet wilderness. The story follows two young brothers and their mother as they travel from Moscow to the Siberian taiga to spend New Year’s with their father, who is working on a remote geological expedition.
The artistic soul of this specific volume is the work of Naum Tseytlin (1909–1997). His illustrations, characterized by a soft, cinematic quality and a deep warmth, perfectly capture the contrast between the cozy Moscow apartment and the breathtaking, snow-covered silence of the Blue Mountains. Tseytlin’s ability to depict the emotional world of the two very different brothers—the mischievous Chuk and the thoughtful Gek—has made his visual interpretation the definitive one for generations of readers.
The 1982 printing by Detskaya Literatura utilized a large album format, allowing for expansive, full-page color spreads that emphasize the epic scale of the journey. Beyond its adventurous plot, the story concludes with one of the most famous passages in Russian literature—a simple yet profound meditation on happiness: "What happiness is—everyone understood it in their own way. But all together people knew and understood that one must live honestly, work hard, and love and cherish this huge, beautiful land..."
As a cornerstone of the Soviet literary canon, Chuk and Gek remains a beloved classic for its humanity, its evocative descriptions of winter, and its timeless portrayal of familial bond. This well-preserved 1982 edition is a prized item for collectors of high-quality Soviet book design and children's illustration.
