The first edition of the single most influential Soviet contribution to the history of medieval mathematics, and the work that established Adolf Pavlovich Yushkevich (1906-1993) as the leading international authority on the mathematical traditions of the medieval East. Born in Odessa to the family of the philosopher Pavel Yushkevich, educated in Paris and Moscow, Yushkevich built his career at the Institute of the History of Science and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences and was awarded the George Sarton Medal of the History of Science Society for lifetime achievement, the highest international distinction in the discipline. The present volume surveys the development of mathematics in China, India, the lands of Islam (the Arab world, Central Asia, Iran, Azerbaijan) and medieval Europe, treating each tradition on its own terms rather than as a corridor between Greek antiquity and the European Renaissance. Its chapters on Islamic mathematics were widely regarded, on publication, as the fullest synthesis then available in any language: the algebraic treatises of al-Khwarizmi, Abu Kamil and al-Karaji, the decimal fractions and root extraction of al-Kashi, the emergence of trigonometry as an independent discipline, and the transmission of positional numeration westward. The book was translated into German by Teubner in 1964 and became the standard reference across European and American history of science faculties, cited continuously for six decades. Published under the executive editorship of Boris Rozenfeld, himself a major historian of non-Euclidean geometry and Islamic science, and issued as the medieval half of the composite work "Mathematics before the Renaissance" alongside Ernst Kolman's volume on antiquity. Copies of the 1961 first printing in sound condition are increasingly sought by historians of science, collectors of Soviet academic publishing, and specialists in Islamic and Central Asian intellectual history.
