A monograph by Akhnef Akhmetovich Yuldashev (1920-1988), a Bashkir linguist and Turkologist born in the village of Kalshali, who served in the Second World War, graduated from the Kuibyshev Pedagogical Institute in 1947 and studied at Moscow State University. From 1950 he worked in the Department of Turkic and Mongolian Languages of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and later became a doctor of philology (1966) and the editor of the Grammar of the Modern Bashkir Literary Language (1981). The present book, issued jointly by the Institute of Linguistics and the Bashkir Branch of the Academy, is one of the first systematic Soviet studies of the Bashkir verb. It consists of two parts: word formation (pp. 17-111) and the system of conjugation (pp. 113-184), followed by a list of abbreviations, a bibliography and a list of sources. The responsible editors are N. K. Dmitriev, the leading Soviet Turkologist (his name appears in a mourning frame, as he had died before publication), and E. I. Ubriatova, a specialist in Yakut and Turkic syntax. The book was printed in only 1,200 copies and was never reissued as far as is known, which makes it a scarce working tool today. It remains a standard reference for Turkologists, Altaicists and typologists, and a useful document of Soviet comparative Turkic linguistics of the 1950s. This copy comes from an institutional library and preserves its stamps and inventory numbers; the original errata slip is present.
