The first Russian edition of Eugene Wigner's landmark monograph, translated from the expanded 1959 Academic Press edition of a work first published in German in 1931 as "Gruppentheorie und ihre Anwendung auf die Quantenmechanik der Atomspektren." Wigner, together with Hermann Weyl, was principally responsible for introducing group-theoretical methods, specifically representation theory, the symmetric group, and the three-dimensional rotation group, into the mathematical apparatus of quantum mechanics, an innovation initially resisted by working physicists as an unwelcome abstraction (the episode later remembered among physicists as the "Gruppenpest") before becoming indispensable to atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. Two years after this Soviet translation appeared, Wigner shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics specifically for his contributions to the theory of the atomic nucleus and elementary particles through the discovery and application of fundamental symmetry principles, the very body of work systematized in this book. The translator's preface, written by the editor Yakov Abramovich Smorodinsky, a leading Soviet theoretical physicist associated with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, situates the volume among the small number of physics monographs from the early 1930s that retained full scientific currency three decades later, noting that despite the proliferation of subsequent literature on group theory in quantum mechanics, Wigner's book remained, in Smorodinsky's judgment, the finest monograph on the subject. This Russian edition made a foundational text of twentieth-century theoretical physics available to the Soviet scientific community at a formative moment for Soviet nuclear and particle theory.
