Wrappers good: light staining and spotting, edge wear with small chips, corners creased. Text block good: scattered foxing and light damp-staining to a few leaves; illustrations bright, text complete and legible; all 8 pages present.

A charming and genuinely scarce wartime Soviet children's picture-book, printed in Tbilisi in 1942 as a road-safety primer for the youngest readers. The anonymous rhymed text follows Zaika the hare, who rushes to school ignoring the rules of the street: he cuts across the square, is nearly run down by a crocodile at the wheel of a motorcar, borrows a scooter and then a bicycle, collides with an elephant, leaps onto a moving tram, and ends the tale battered and on crutches, lamenting his own foolishness. The concluding lesson, endorsed on the final page, is to cross the street only at marked crossings. The lively cast of anthropomorphic animals is rendered in warm color lithography by G. M. Cherkashin, in a folk-inflected graphic idiom characteristic of Georgian book illustration of the period. The booklet was approved by the Scientific-Methodological Preschool Cabinet of the People's Commissariat of Education of Georgia and issued by the production enterprise of the Georgian branch of the Art Fund of the USSR (Khudfond), an unusual wartime publisher for a juvenile title. It will appeal to collectors of Soviet children's illustrated books, wartime and Georgian imprints, and road-transport ephemera.
