A charming example of late-1930s Soviet illustrated sheet music for preschool children: a collection of twelve songs to verses by the children's poet Olga Vysotskaya (1903-1970), whose texts were later set by such composers as D. Kabalevsky and M. Starokadomsky; here the music is by Mikhail Iordansky and Mikhail Raukhverger, both prominent Soviet composers for children whose songs ("Blue Sled," "Little Octobrists," and others) entered the standard repertoire of Soviet preschool music education. The collection brings together twelve short songs on everyday and playful subjects familiar to every Soviet child of the era: "Lil' Horse," "Cow," "Dog," "Cat," "Aeroplane," "Bus," "Tram," "Holiday," "Red Army Men," "Who Knows How to Wash Clean?," "At Work," and "Ai! Ai! Ai!" Each song is accompanied by a piano part and a bright color illustration by the artist G. Yakubovich, in the readily recognizable idiom of pre-war Soviet children's book graphics, populated with toy horses, teddy bears, kittens, and mice. Despite a substantial print run of 25,000 copies, illustrated Soviet music booklets of this kind for young children rarely survive intact and in good condition today, since these thin, staple-bound pamphlets saw heavy use in nurseries and kindergartens and were readily lost or discarded.
