The first edition of one of the most internationally influential Soviet problem books in mathematics, containing over 1,400 problems covering nearly the entire classical theory of functions of a complex variable: conformal mapping, power series and Laurent series, singularities and residues, analytic continuation, and infinite products. Five years after its Moscow publication, this exact edition was translated into English by J. Berry and edited by T. Kovari, and issued by Pergamon Press in 1965 as Volume 68 of the International Series of Monographs in Pure and Applied Mathematics under the title A Collection of Problems on Complex Analysis. That translation was itself reprinted by Dover Publications in 1991 and remains in print today, its bibliographical note explicitly identifying the present 1960 Fizmatgiz edition as its source text. Few Soviet problem books achieved this degree of international afterlife: the Volkovyskii-Lunts-Aramanovich collection continues to be assigned in complex analysis courses worldwide, making this first Russian edition the direct ancestor of a text still actively used by English-speaking students and researchers more than sixty years after its original publication.
