Akaki Tsereteli (1840-1915) ranks alongside Ilia Chavchavadze as one of the two central figures of the nineteenth-century Georgian national awakening, so closely paired in Georgian cultural memory that the two are commonly invoked together simply as "Ilia and Akaki." A leading member of the "Tergdaleulebi," the generation of Georgian intellectuals educated in Russia who returned to modernize Georgian letters and public life, Tsereteli worked alongside Chavchavadze in founding the Society for the Spreading of Literacy among Georgians, edited the satirical journal "Khumara" (for which he was briefly arrested in 1907 for its anti-tsarist and nationalist tone), and founded his own monthly, "Akaki's Monthly Collection" (1897-1900). Called "Georgia's selfless troubadour" by the critic Geronti Kikodze, he was the most versatile and prolific Georgian poet of his century: many of his lyric poems entered Georgian oral and musical tradition as folk songs, while his historical narrative poems, among them "Bagrat Didi" (1875), "Tornike Eristavi" (1884), and "Natela" (1900), and dramatic poems such as "Tamar Tsbieri" (1885) and "Medea" (1895), remain staples of the Georgian literary canon. This set represents the first four of the seven volumes of a mid-century critical edition of his complete works, prepared by the same generation of Soviet Georgian philologists (Al. Abasheli, Pavle Ingorokva, Ioseb Grishashvili) who also edited the standard editions of Chavchavadze; volume I preserves a facsimile plate of the poet's own manuscript hand alongside his portrait. Though the set lacks its concluding three volumes, the four offered here gather the core of his poetry, narrative verse, and prose fiction, and remain a substantial working library for any collection of Georgian Romantic and national literature.
