Edward Lee Thorndike (1874-1949), the American psychologist whose experimental work on animal learning and the "law of effect" laid the foundations of behaviorist and connectionist learning theory, was among the most influential educational psychologists of the early twentieth century. This 1926 Moscow translation of his "Principles of Teaching, Based on Psychology" appeared during the brief window of the 1920s when Soviet pedagogy actively engaged with Western experimental psychology, before the tightening of ideological control and the 1936 suppression of pedology. Its introductory essay is by Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky (1896-1934), then at the very outset of his career and only beginning to formulate the cultural-historical theory of psychological development that would later make him one of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century; Vygotsky's own major work, "Pedagogical Psychology," was issued by this same publisher, "Rabotnik Prosveshcheniya," in the same year, and is advertised on the rear wrapper of the present volume alongside works by Blonsky, Krupskaya, Lunacharsky, and Dewey. The edition carried the formal endorsement of the Scientific-Pedagogical Section of the State Academic Council (GUS), the body charged with vetting texts for the new Soviet unified labor school, situating Thorndike's connectionist theory of learning within the broader ferment of Soviet progressive pedagogy of the 1920s. The present copy survives entirely unopened, its gatherings never cut apart by a reader in the century since publication - a genuinely scarce physical state for a working pedagogical text of this kind. Of interest equally to historians of psychology and of Soviet education, and to collectors of Vygotsky association material.
