This is the fifth fascicle of the guidebooks issued for the petroleum excursion that followed the XVII International Geological Congress, held in Moscow in the summer of 1937, a showcase event of Soviet earth science. The excursion, as recorded by participant Hans Kugler, led from Moscow through the Urals slope, the Samara Bend, Azerbaijan, Daghestan, the North Caucasus and Georgia to Maikop and the Taman Peninsula and back. Each fascicle covered one stage and was edited by Andrey Yakovlevich Krems (1899-1975). The running heads credit K. A. Prokopov, M. I. Varentsov and colleagues. This number opens with a geographical-economic sketch and a survey of the geology of the north-western Caucasus, then describes the route from Tuapse to Khadyzhenskaya, the Maikop oil-bearing region (the Pshish valley, Asphalt Mountain, the Khadyzhensk and Apsheronsk fields), and the north-western Kuban district with the Krymsk-Kudako, Keslerovo-Varenikovsk and Suvorovo-Cherkessk fields, closing with the Taman Peninsula and a bibliography. The illustrations include a composite stratigraphic section, a folding geological profile of the Apsheronsk field, a folding map of the northern anticlinal folds of the Keslerovo-Varenikovsk area and a plate of field photographs. The title page carries the congress emblem with the motto Mente et Malleo. With a print run of 2,000 copies and a narrow professional audience, copies are scarce today and are sought by collectors of petroleum history, Caucasus and Kuban regional geology, and congress memorabilia.
