The first complete Soviet documentary edition of the proceedings of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, assembled under the general editorship of Roman Andreyevich Rudenko, who served as Chief Prosecutor for the USSR at the trial itself. Compiled by a team of Soviet jurists who had direct roles in the prosecution and its documentation, the seven volumes reproduce the trial's full documentary record in chronological and thematic order: the Allied declarations on Nazi war guilt and the establishment of the Tribunal, the opening speeches of the four chief prosecutors and the case for a common plan or conspiracy (vol. I); the preparation and unleashing of aggressive war against Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Greece, Britain, and France (vol. II); war crimes against prisoners of war and the civilian populations of the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and France, including the plunder of state, public, and private property, the destruction of cultural and scientific monuments, churches, and monasteries, and the forced deportation of civilians for slave labor (vol. III); the machinery of the concentration and extermination camps, the persecution and destruction of Slavic peoples and of European Jewry, and the evidentiary case against each individual defendant (vol. IV); the cross-examinations of the defendants and the speeches of defense counsel (vol. V); the case against the indicted Nazi organizations (vol. VI); and the closing speeches of the prosecution, the defendants' final statements, the verdict, and the record of its execution (vol. VII). As the first Russian-language documentary corpus of the trial prepared from the Soviet side of the prosecution, the set remains a primary source for historians of the Second World War, the Holocaust, and the development of international criminal law, and for collectors of Soviet legal and historical publishing of the postwar decade.
