A companion volume issued for one of the foundational works of the twentieth-century Russian stage: Boris Asafiev's ballet "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai", which premiered at the Kirov (Mariinsky) Theatre in Leningrad on 28 September 1934, with choreography by Rostislav Zakharov, libretto by Nikolai Volkov, designs by Valentina Khodasevich, and Galina Ulanova in the role of Maria. The ballet is universally regarded as the inaugural masterpiece of the Soviet "drambalet" or choreodrama, in which dramatic narrative and Stanislavsky-influenced acting were placed at the center of the danced action. This collection gathers four essays on the work: Grigory Vinokur, the eminent linguist and Pushkin scholar, on Pushkin's "Crimean poem"; the composer Boris Asafiev writing on his own score; Valentian Bogdanov-Berezovsky on Asafiev's ballet music; and the librettist Nikolai Volkov on the Pushkin ballet, followed by a scene-by-scene synopsis and a cast of characters. The volume's date is significant: 1937 marked the centenary of Pushkin's death, observed across the Soviet Union as an enormous state cultural campaign, and this booklet belongs to the rich publishing output of that jubilee year. With a Pushkin self-portrait frontispiece and a plate of the historic palace fountain, it remains an attractive piece of theatrical and Pushkiniana ephemera, of interest to collectors of Russian ballet history, Soviet stage design, and the 1937 Pushkin centenary. The present copy carries a private gift inscription of June 1938, adding period provenance.
