The first Russian edition of a monograph by the Romanian mathematician Constantin Teleman, translated from his "Elemente de topologie si varietati diferentiabile" (Bucharest, 1964) and, per the author's preface to the Russian edition, expanded specifically for Soviet readers with additional material on the relationship between singular simplicial and cubical simplicial homology theory, the Hurewicz isomorphism theorem for homotopy and homology groups with integer coefficients, and a generalization of the fundamental group and connectedness intended to yield a method for constructing principal bundles over a given base, an idea Teleman notes was independently developed within the framework of simplicial complexes by John Milnor in a 1956 Annals of Mathematics paper. The translation was undertaken at the initiative of two senior Soviet differential geometers, Nikolai Yefimov and Georgii Laptev, the latter serving as scientific editor of the Russian text; Laptev was among the foremost Soviet authorities on the theory of fiber bundles and differential-geometric structures, making him a natural editor for a text addressing precisely the intersection of algebraic topology and differentiable manifold theory relevant to his own research. Intended, in the author's words, as a first introduction to a rapidly developing field bearing on global differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and the theory of functions of several complex variables, the book presupposes only elementary set theory, calculus, and differential geometry, and was aimed at mathematicians of every specialization as well as theoretical physicists. As a Mir imprint translation from Romanian rather than the more commonly encountered English, French, or German source languages, the volume is also of incidental interest to collectors tracking the range of source languages within Soviet scientific translation publishing.
