Teimuraz I (1589-1663), King of Kakheti and for a time of Kartli, is one of the few figures of Georgian history who were poets as well as rulers. Much of his reign was spent resisting Safavid domination, and he died in Iran, but his verse made him a central author of seventeenth-century Georgian literature. His best-known work, the Martyrdom of Queen Ketevan, was written in 1625 after the death of his mother. He also reworked Persian romances for Georgian readers, among them Leyli and Majnun, Yusuf and Zulaikha, the Rose and the Nightingale and the Candle and the Moth. This volume, issued in 1934 in the series Georgian Classical Literature, presents itself as the first complete edition of his works, with a study, the text and a lexicon. The scholarly apparatus was prepared by Alexander Baramidze (1902-1994), the literary historian, and G. Jakobia, and the responsible editor was the poet Simon Chikovani (1902-1966), then a leading figure of Georgian Soviet literature. The book was designed by Lado Grigolia (1903-1977), a graduate of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts who created typefaces, headpieces and ornaments based on old Georgian manuscripts and designed more than a hundred books. It remains the basic reference text for early modern Georgian poetry and for the study of Persian-Georgian literary contacts.
