A rare early Soviet-era museum guide to the State Hermitage Museum, published in 1933. This pocket-sized guidebook reflects a fascinating transitional period in the history of the Hermitage. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, the museum was undergoing a radical ideological reorganization to fit Marxist historical frameworks, while simultaneously suffering from the tragic, secretive sales of its masterpieces by the Soviet government to Western buyers to fund industrialization. The guide outlines the museum's new "sociological" structure, dividing the vast collections into sections such as "Pre-class Society," "The Antique World," and "The Epoch of Feudalism." Notably, it includes a large folding plan of the Winter Palace and Hermitage buildings, providing a snapshot of the gallery layouts during this tumultuous decade. This specific complete copy contains a curious typographical misprint typical of early Soviet mass printing, where the page following 70 is erroneously numbered 73, though the text continues uninterrupted. Such early and fragile paper-bound guides from the 1930s rarely survive intact and remain compelling artifacts of Soviet museology and cultural politics.
