Vols. III and VI show occasional pencil underlining in the text. Vol. XIII lacks the free rear endpaper leaf. The "Short Biography" volume's front board has a small non-through puncture. Otherwise condition good: the set is complete at 14 volumes, text blocks firm and clean throughout.

The standard Soviet edition of Stalin's collected political and theoretical writings, prepared by the Institute of Marx-Engels-Lenin under the Central Committee of the CPSU(b) and issued in uniform bindings by the State Publishing House of Political Literature beginning in 1946. The edition was planned to run further but was left at thirteen volumes, closing with material through January 1934; volume 13 itself was published in 1953, the year of Stalin's death, making the set's final installment contemporaneous with the end of the era it documents. No continuation was published in the USSR after 1953 or after the 1956 Twentieth Party Congress, at which Khrushchev's denunciation of the Stalin cult led many Soviet libraries to withdraw or restrict complete sets of this edition from open circulation. A resumed, differently edited continuation covering 1934-1952 (volumes 14-18) appeared only decades later, in Tver in the 1990s-2000s, under different editorial auspices unconnected to the original Institute project. The accompanying Short Biography, compiled by a team led by Georgy Aleksandrov and including the philosopher Mark Mitin and the future Pravda editor Pyotr Pospelov, is present here in its second, revised and enlarged 1947 edition, part of the same official apparatus of the Stalin cult that the Institute's parallel Works project served. As the authoritative Stalinist-era printing of the collected works, prepared while Stalin was alive and under the direct oversight of the Party's own historical institute, and concluding almost exactly at his death, the set is of interest to collectors and researchers of Soviet political publishing, the historiography of the Stalin personality cult, and the material culture of official Soviet ideological production; complete matching sets of all fourteen volumes are less commonly offered together than individual tomes, many having been broken up or discarded from institutional holdings over the decades since the edition's initial and later contested reception.
