This pocket-size volume prints the Code on Marriage and the Family of the Azerbaijan SSR, approved by a law of the republic's Supreme Soviet dated 26 December 1969 and in force from 1 April 1970. It was one of the republican codes enacted at the end of the 1960s in line with the all-Union legislation on marriage and the family. The text is divided into five sections and twenty-two chapters. It covers general provisions, the conditions of marriage, the rights and duties of spouses, dissolution and invalidity of marriage, the establishment of parentage, parental rights, maintenance obligations, adoption, guardianship, and the registration of civil status acts (births, marriages, adoptions, divorces, changes of name and deaths). A final section deals with the application of Soviet family law to foreigners and stateless persons. The volume was issued by the Azerbaijan State Publishing House on behalf of the Supreme Soviet in a print run of 6,200 copies. Although the text is in Russian, the colophon repeats the title in Azerbaijani in the Cyrillic alphabet used in the republic from 1939 until the early 1990s. As a statute book, it has limited collecting value in the conventional sense. Its interest lies in its historical context: it is a primary source for Soviet family law and for the legal and social history of Soviet Azerbaijan and the Caucasus.
